Shorter walks

Notes for a return visit ... Bramble Villa East for views, Castle Cottage ditto, or Hanmers, or Square Cottage with CH. Or OHS of course.

Today started with topup shop of bread & butter, impulse purchases fiercely resisted. We haven't carried wallet/purse since arriving due to the tab system in both shop and pub - strangely liberating.

0945-1200 was a guided, participatory tour of the SW corner, including various houses, castle, Benson's Cave, Benjamin's Seat. We wrote impressions, haikus, and drew pictures. All slightly fey. Led by mature fine arts student doing her Masters.

Lunch in the house for once. Rather chaotic with three different preparations simultaneously. We took ourselves off for a very pleasant walk along the upper east path, an easy route, almost to Halfway, then retraced our steps via a rest at Old Quarry Cottages (remains of). Saw a quarry pool that had carp in it - most surprising. We had another long stop in 'bird valley' above Millcombe, where the amazing Merlin app identified 10 different birds. Home at 5 for the usual tea and cake. A little light packing and then early to the Tavern for dinner. The food is really good, and so is the beer. Fighting to stay awake afterwards, bed at 9pm.

 Good, cosy night. Used gas for coffee and microwave for porridge. Spent a few hours in Conwy, parking outside the tiny town centre. Another big tick and worth revisiting. Coffee at marina, ice cream on quay, lunch in van. Easy 90min drive to Gatley. Much chatting, eating, drinking. They had early shift so bed at 9pm. N caught up on Must See Moments from Paris Olympics. L reported a river swim, poetic progress, and a new friend who is in Plymouth Labour - small world.

Gatley & Cheadle

 KP both working 6am-2pm. Leisurely morning for N, doing this blogging and planning tomorrow and Scotland in Sep. Heard the v sad news that Audrey didn't wake up this morning. A peaceful passing. She was the last of that generation in L's family on either side - loss of a much loved aunt and end of an era. An unusual view of the van. KP & N walked to Cheadle, to a park and then a chi-chi coffee shop for cafe kuchen. Quite hot walking. Collapsed on garden sofa for a good read. K has had a 9% pay rise, the first she's ever not fought for. Obviously this new senior journalist role on BBC England page is going well. Pete also v happy with his SJ (producer) role on the One. They are having trouble, the nice kind, deciding what to do with all their weekends together. Mushroom stroganoff and Olympics highlights completed the day.  L reported a sea swim with two others again, despite rain; these poets are hard core. Goodbye Vesteralen - hello Gatwick

2 Feb: A lot of pitching in the night. Up at 0645 and breakfast at 0730 as usual, though today Iain and Liz joined us. Finished packing and put bulging cases in corridor, from where they were whisked into the bowels ready for offloading. Said goodbye to our lovely little cabin. We set up camp in the lecture lounge, ready for Laura's last talk. It's a pity the windows are so dirty. This and running out of decaf coffee, and having no decaf tea, are the only constructive suggestions we can give in the survey to come. Arrival into beautiful Bergen, disembarking, bus to airport, bag drop, security all very smooth. Flight home also smooth, grateful to fall into Premier Inn.
