Helston, Old friends
Nice slow start at Henry's. It didnt quite rain. Definitely come here again, although no wifi at the van is frustrating, the showers are not heated and it takes half an hour to drive down the Lizard from Helston, past RNAS Culdrose. So, maybe not.
We had a walk round Helston in the morning, it's a fine looking old town in the centre, lots of granite block buildings, water running down gulleys in the streets.
Checked out Elysian Fields campsite as we'll probably come in the dark. It is a field, and empty. Fine. Went to Sue & Richard's house in Trew. It's lovely, modernised 1850s with solar and airpump, facing a green. Single track road up there, of course.
After a lovely chinwag we drove in convoy to Kota Kai in Porthleven. Wonderful meal, overlooking the harbour, and great conversation. A really good meeting of minds. We all strolled to the fisherman's Mission and the breakwater which always feature in TV reports on storms.
After much hugs and promises to keep in touch we drove round to Ivy Cottage in Rinsey and Leaf. Tea and scones, with cream on top and much lovely catching up after more than 30 years. Through the Quakers, Leaf is in a group of 3 writing memoirs who meet every 2 weeks with a promise of 1000 words written. It sounds like a great way to be incentivised, pity I'm over 2 hours away, says Nic. Lesley and Leaf suggested Nic finds/starts a similar group in Plymouth. Nic says hmmm.
Both Sue and Leaf, when told where we're stopping tonight, said "oh, no"! Turns out site owner has been building and expanding perhaps without permission but she's a Councillor. When we went into their 'tavern' to pay and get wifi code, Nic was given a piece of Cornish Cake ... so he thinks the place is alright. The ensuite shower units are very warm and the toilets good too.
Also the wifi works well. Lesley was able to join a poetry Zoom event.
