Dorset - The Retro Tour

Finally arranged the meet-up with old friends from Blandford days, triggered by writing to them after Mum died.

Forecast suggest today is only decent weather, so drove straight to Studland. Found a great halfway stop on the faster route, Millers farm shop at Kilmington.  Managed to squeeze the van in the car park behind the huts. Said hello to people in Mum's old hut; Richard & Judy have had it since Mum sold it. Richard did some work on it for Mum before that so they remembered her and were delighted to meet us - lovely chat. 

Had a 20 minute swim, so warm. Beach busy but not unbearably. Ice cream, stroll, tea. Really hot. 

Hunters Moon is a CAMC site on the Bere Regis road, north of Wareham. V organised, clean ... and busy. Took some care choosing pitch given thunderstorm forecast, and given we'll be here 4 nights. It was pizza night, so we succumbed. Delicious.

After a quiet night post the storm, and a light breakfast, we hit Heligan again. Free this time as got weekly pass free yday. Did the Jungle (spectacular & tropical) and the Hidden Valley (hot and birdy - heard lots and saw 2 buzzards). There was even a rope bridge Lunch in van then the 7 minute drive to Mevagissey. Never been. Pretty, touristy, excellent museum, busy harbour. Had ice cream and cheese straw, both shared natch. Saw a turnstone on the quayside. Headed home at 1600, before the school holiday onslaught.

Gatley & Cheadle

 KP both working 6am-2pm. Leisurely morning for N, doing this blogging and planning tomorrow and Scotland in Sep. Heard the v sad news that Audrey didn't wake up this morning. A peaceful passing. She was the last of that generation in L's family on either side - loss of a much loved aunt and end of an era. An unusual view of the van. KP & N walked to Cheadle, to a park and then a chi-chi coffee shop for cafe kuchen. Quite hot walking. Collapsed on garden sofa for a good read. K has had a 9% pay rise, the first she's ever not fought for. Obviously this new senior journalist role on BBC England page is going well. Pete also v happy with his SJ (producer) role on the One. They are having trouble, the nice kind, deciding what to do with all their weekends together. Mushroom stroganoff and Olympics highlights completed the day.  L reported a sea swim with two others again, despite rain; these poets are hard core. A Corking day

Up at 0630, chatted to Kevin over breakfast after he'd returned from his spin class at the gym, said our goodbyes with heartfelt thanks and headed off by 0830. 2 hr drive to Cork slightly marred by mistake at bottom of M8 - it does not become the N8! Googlemaps got us back on route and we went to the Park & Ride - L's bright idea to avoid city centre parking stress. €5 for parking and return bus for 2 of us, pleased with that. We hit the English Market first, and have never seen such displays of meat and fish, we think it even beat Bury market. We had a coffee and resisted the cakes, strolled in the city centre, Saint Patrick's street, and climbed onto the City Tour bus. After a cold, damp start the sun came out v hot. We ate sandwiches kindly provided by Noel as we toured the city. The pre-recorded commentary was leavened by acerbic comments from the lady driver - she was very funny.
